Good progressive vision comes from centring, lens design, frame fit and a realistic look at how your day runs.
Progressive glasses combine several viewing distances in a single lens. The upper part usually carries the distance power, below it follows the range for intermediate distances and further down the near zone. There is no visible dividing line between these zones. The power changes gradually, so you don’t have to keep swapping glasses when you look at the road, at the person in front of you, at your phone or into a book.
To use the appropriate zone, you guide your gaze through different parts of the lens. For distance you look more or less straight ahead, for the screen a little lower and for reading further down still. Towards the sides, the construction leaves areas that are less broadly usable. How wide the comfortable fields of view feel depends among other things on the lens design, your prescription values, the frame and the working distances chosen. Progressive glasses are therefore not a standard product that can be described by power alone.
When focusing at close range gradually takes more effort, progressive glasses can bring the different tasks of the day together in one solution. That includes switching between road signs and instruments while driving, looking along shelves while shopping, conversations, your phone, a menu and longer periods of reading. Whether that arrangement makes sense for you is something we establish not from age alone, but from the visual tasks you actually have.
Some people also need a specialised solution. Anyone who spends many hours at a monitor may benefit from computer glasses with more generous areas for near and intermediate distance. For very short working distances or particular activities, a further addition can be useful. Progressive glasses don’t have to cover every conceivable situation on their own; what counts is which distances take priority in your day.
The measured values are the basis, but not yet the finished pair of glasses. For the calculation and centring we record, among other things, pupillary distance and fitting height. Just as important is how the chosen frame sits on the face: its tilt, the distance between eye and lens and the position of the lenses all influence where you look through the individual viewing zones. Even a small change in the way the frame sits can be considerably more noticeable with progressive lenses than with simple single vision lenses.
In conversation we also consider your height, typical eye movements, preferred reading distance, workplace, mobility and leisure. Do bring your current glasses with you. They show us what works well for you and where you would like more comfort. An up-to-date eye test helps to establish the starting values clearly and to put changes in context.
New progressive glasses can feel unfamiliar at first, because eyes, head movement and gaze have to work together. Some people find the viewing zones quickly, others need more time for it. Wearing them regularly can help you get to know the new arrangement. For targets off to the side it is often more comfortable to move head and gaze together in the direction you want, rather than looking through the edge of the lens.
Adapting does not mean simply putting up with persistent problems, though. If you feel unsure over a longer period, cannot reach important distances clearly, the glasses press or the viewing zones sit awkwardly, then fit, centring, values and lens design should be checked. On stairs and while driving in particular: only use new glasses in demanding situations once you feel confident with them. You will find more detailed guidance in our guide to adapting to progressive glasses.
At FRANZ OPTICS in Sölden we begin with how your day runs. We talk about work, reading, driving, your phone, leisure and those situations where your current solution reaches its limits. From that we derive which lens design and which frame suit your priorities. The fit of the frame and the centring are then matched precisely to you.
Our aim is a decision you can follow: you should understand which zones the lens offers, where its limits lie and how to use it day to day. The result is a pair of progressive glasses in which function, comfort and aesthetics are considered together. For an overview of the other possibilities, see the Eyewear section.
