Vision that fits your life.

What are computer glasses?

Computer glasses are set up for the distances that keep changing at a typical workplace. These include the monitor, the keyboard, documents on the desk, your phone and often the people you are talking to nearby. Instead of covering the whole range from far to near, they concentrate their usable viewing areas on near and intermediate distance. During longer periods of screen work that can allow a calmer change of focus.

Which range makes sense depends on what you do. Someone working mainly on a laptop needs different distances from someone with two large monitors, client conversations or a frequent glance across the room. “Computer glasses” is therefore not one fixed type of lens. It describes a solution matched to the workplace, whose exact form follows from your prescription values and the real working distances.

Why reading glasses are often not enough at the monitor

Reading glasses are usually set up for a relatively short distance, a book or close handwork for example. A monitor often stands considerably further away. If the glasses are calculated for near vision only, you have to move closer to the screen or adopt an awkward head position in order to see clearly. Moving between keyboard, documents and display can then be restricted too.

Computer glasses calculated to suit offer more usable depth. They can connect the near range at the desk with the monitor distance and – depending on the version – a limited part of the room. That is no substitute for an ergonomic workplace, but it can help you keep your natural sitting position more easily. Claims about the general protective effect of particular filters are not the focus here; what matters first are prescription values, working distances, viewing angles and a correction that fits.

Computer glasses or progressive glasses?

Progressive glasses are designed as an everyday solution from distance to near. For the monitor, part of the intermediate zone is available within them. That can work well with occasional screen use. Anyone who spends many hours at fixed working distances, however, often wants broader usable areas for monitor and desk. That is exactly where computer glasses come in.

Away from the workplace they have deliberate limits. Depending on the range chosen, they are not intended for driving or for sustained distance vision, for example. Many people therefore use everyday glasses and add a specialised pair at work. Which combination is sensible can only be judged once use, wearing time and the freedom of movement you want are known.

The workplace determines the right solution

For the consultation we are interested in monitor distance and monitor height, the position of keyboard and documents, the number and arrangement of screens and the way you sit. Professional tasks play a part too: a conversation across a desk calls for a different range than concentrated work at a single display. Where workplaces change, a compromise may be necessary, and we will discuss it openly with you.

Photographs of your workplace from your normal sitting position are helpful. Where you can, measure the most important distances and bring your current glasses with you. Describe when you have to move closer, raise or lower your head, and which text sizes give you difficulty. An up-to-date eye test supplies the optical starting values. From all of this we choose lens design, range and frame so that they fit together.

Relaxed vision at work

At FRANZ OPTICS we treat screen work as a concrete everyday situation, not an abstract distance. In the consultation in Sölden we can match your visual habits, the fit of the frame and the viewing zones you need precisely to one another. The fitting heights are measured on the frame you will actually wear.

It is also worth taking a realistic look at how the glasses are used after you collect them. If the monitor stands differently from the way it was planned, the glasses slip or an important distance is missing, we look into the cause. Further practical guidance on working distances and choosing glasses can be found in our guide to computer glasses at work. What you get is not a generic “computer solution”, but glasses for your particular workplace.
